Invisible Braces

invisible braces

Invisible braces help straighten teeth and are used to treat conditions including crooked teeth, overbite, underbite, crowding and gapped teeth.

What are invisible braces?

Orthodontists use the term invisible braces to describe several types of treatments designed to fix your teeth.

Clear aligners are removable plastic retainers that gently coax your teeth into a new position. Each aligner should be worn for a few weeks and is replaced at home with the next set in the series. This continues until you have straight teeth. Aligners are almost invisible when worn. This makes aligners the most popular type of invisible dental braces available today.

Clear braces are semi-permanent orthodontics that are cemented to your teeth and use wires, springs, hooks and bands to move teeth into position. Clear braces replace metal brackets with clear ones and use a “frosted” wire to further hide the device. Clear braces cannot be removed and require regular visits to your orthodontists to progress your treatment.

Lingual braces are like standard wired braces but are fastened to the tongue-side of your teeth making them almost invisible. Lingual braces require regular visits to your dentist to progress your treatment.

This document refers to Smile White clear aligners when discussing invisible braces.

Are invisible braces effective?

Invisible teeth braces are effective in treating a wide range of dental alignment issues including:

  • Crooked teeth – Twisted or off-centre teeth
  • Overbite & jet bite – Top teeth protrude over your bottom teeth
  • Underbite – Bottom teeth protrude under your top teeth
  • Gapped teeth – Large spaces between teeth
  • Crossbite – Teeth are not uniform and clash when clenched
  • Open bite – Top and bottom teeth don’t touch when teeth are clenched
  • Malocclusions – Irregular bite when teeth are clenched

Treatments with invisible braces

The length of your treatment will depend on the severity of your individual case. In most cases treatments last between 6 and 12 months.

  • Mild – Typically 4-6 months
  • Moderate – Typically 6-12 months
  • Severe – 12 -18 months

The process of getting invisible braces

We have streamlined the process of getting invisible braces to minimise visits to your orthodontist.

  1. Book your free e-consultation
Our consultants will discuss your treatment and book an appointment with a Smile White approved dentist near you.
  2. A check-up at your local Smile White dentist
A check-up helps to identify any pre-existing issues that may affect your treatment. Cavities, gum disease and receding gums will need to be treated before your braces can be used. If you have no issues a 3D scan or impressions will be taken of your teeth.
  3. Fitting at your local Smile White dentist
On your next visit your aligners will be tailored for comfort and the home treatment processes explained.
  4. Treatment at home
Wear your braces for 20-22 hours per day, and update your braces every seven days to progress your treatment.
  5. Get straight teeth
Our aftercare team will monitor your progress and help solve any issues or concerns that you may have.

Fitting invisible braces

Smile White’s invisible braces are simply clipped snuggly over your teeth.

Do invisible braces hurt?

All braces are designed to gradually move your teeth into a new position. As a result, you will experience some mild discomfort in the first few days of use. Your dentist can help recommend over-the-counter painkillers to help minimise your discomfort.

Invisible braces vs. metal braces

There are many benefits of invisible braces when compared to metal orthodontics including:

  • Invisible braces are up to 60% cheaper than metal braces.
  • Invisible braces are almost imperceptible. Metal braces are unsightly.
  • Invisible braces are updated at home. Metal braces require many visits to your orthodontist.
  • Invisible braces are removable. Metal braces are fixed to your teeth.
  • With removable braces you can eat and drink what you like. You must avoid hard, crunchy and sticky foods with metal braces
  • Invisible braces are easy to clean and maintain. Metal braces are challenging to maintain

Cleaning invisible braces

Dark foods and drinks can stain your invisible braces. After drinking coffee, tea, red wine or eating tomato sauce-based meals, please brush your teeth before reinserting your braces. This helps maintain their colour and stops food build up causing discomfort.

Do I need to avoid any foods?

As your invisible braces are removable, you do not need to avoid any foods or drinks. This is a key difference to wired orthodontics which restrict you from eating your favourite foods. Enjoy apples, carrots, sweetcorn, crisps, popcorn, toffee, nuts, coffee, tea, red wine, pasta sauces, ribs, steak and chicken wings without issue.
