Clear aligner FAQs

Clear aligners vs braces

We all know braces – metal brackets and wires, frequent dentist visits, elastics and wires. Clear aligners are different. They’re removable, more comfortable and practically invisible. If you trust yourself to wear aligners every day for 20-22 hours, then change trays every 7-10 days, then aligners are a great option. If you like the undetectability of clear aligners, but don’t like the idea of the maintenance – ceramic braces are worth definitely exploring.

Will clear aligners work for me?

Clear aligners work really well if you have gap teeth, buck teeth, crooked teeth, an underbite, overbite, crossbite or overjet. Want to know if clear aligners will work for your unique smile? Book a free online consultation with a smile advisor to find out.

How do clear aligners work?

Clear aligners are removable plastic trays custom-fit to your teeth and secured with composite “dot” attachments. You’ll wear these for 20-22 hours a day, every day, removing them only to eat, drink and brush. Every 7-10 days, you’ll switch aligner trays. Each set of aligners micro-move your teeth, gradually getting your teeth aligned to be closer to your final smile, as planned in your initial treatment plan.

How much do aligners cost?

In the UK, clear aligners can cost anywhere from £1,500 to upwards of £5,500, depending on the dentist, practice location, case complexity and quality of care. At-home impression kits, while very affordable, can’t offer the same level of precision and safety as GDC-approved, medical-grade prescription aligners. When you choose Smile White clear aligners, you’re getting clinical oversight and predictive results at an affordable price. Our prices range from £995 to £4,895.

Can I eat and drink with my aligners in?

Take your aligners out before eating or drinking anything except unflavoured water. This keeps them clear, clean and working just the way they should. It’s a good idea to brush before putting your aligners back in to stop stains and bad odours.

How long will I need to wear retainers after treatment?

Wear them 22 hours a day for at least six months and, after that, at least a few nights every week to keep your results. It’s one of the best self-investments you can make: retainers protect the time, care and money you’ve put into your smile, and help prevent the natural shifting that happens as we age. Even after aligner treatment, the bones beneath your teeth are still settling. Retainers keep everything in place, and make sure that your new smile lasts.

Can I use clear aligners if my teeth are crowded?

Yes, clear aligners are a great option for crowded teeth. To make space for them to move, your dentist might recommend IPR (interproximal reduction). This quick, pain-free procedure gently removes tiny amounts (0.75mm at most) of enamel between certain teeth to reduce their width. It’s usually done during your aligner fitment appointment. You might feel a little pressure or vibration, but no pain – and it helps your treatment work smoothly and safely.

What happens if I fall behind on wearing my aligners?

It happens, life gets busy. If you miss a few hours, wear your current tray a little longer before switching to the next one. If you’ve been off-track for a while, contact your Smile White dentist for advice on next steps.

How do I clean my aligners?

Brush them gently with a soft toothbrush and lukewarm water.

What if my teeth don’t move as planned?

That’s why dentist oversight matters. Your Smile White partnered dentist monitors your progress and adjusts your plan if needed. If more aligners are required, we’ll cover them at no extra cost (as long as you’ve worn them as directed). You pay for a straight smile and that’s exactly what you’ll get.

What if I lose an aligner?

Don’t worry, it happens. If you lose or break an aligner, contact your dentist as soon as you can. They’ll arrange a replacement, which typically takes 7-10 days to arrive at their dental practice for collection. Replacements are available within reason and at our discretion — the sooner you get in touch, the sooner we can get you back on track.

Will people notice I’m wearing aligners?

Most likely not! Smile White clear aligners are designed to be near-invisible. Most people won’t notice unless you point them out.

Do aligners hurt?

You might feel some pressure for a few days when switching to a new tray – that’s normal. It’s a sign they’re working. Most people describe it as mild discomfort that fades quickly.

Can I drink coffee or wine with aligners?

Take them out before drinking anything except water. Coffee, tea and red wine can stain aligners (and your teeth). Rinse or brush before popping them back in.

Can I talk normally with aligners in?

Yes. It might feel strange at first, and you could notice a slight lisp in the first few days, but your mouth adjusts quickly.

Do I need to wear aligners all the time?

For the best results: 20–22 hours a day. Take them out for eating, drinking and brushing – but otherwise, keep them in so your teeth keep moving as planned.
