We recommend using a good quality fluoride toothpaste, a soft bristled toothbrush and a water flosser for the best results.
Brush twice a day using a pea sized amount of toothpaste on the tooth brush. Gently brush the front, back and top of each tooth, making sure the bristles reach into the gaps between your teeth. Brush along wires and around brackets. Avoid brushing too hard which can cause gums to bleed.
Using a water flosser, clean along the front and back gumline and between your teeth. Gently clean around and over each bracket.
If in doublt, ask your dentist for instruction.
This orthodontic treatment uses clear or tooth coloured brackets and frosted wires instead of the more visible metallic ones used in standard braces. This helps to hide your braces when in place and minimises any attention being drawn to your mouth.
Brackets hold the wires in place. The wires are adjusted to push or pull teeth into alignment. Adjustments are needed every few weeks meaning a scheduled visit back to your dentist to continue treatment.
Braces aren’t necessarily painful, but they can cause temporary discomfort. This is completely normal, and it usually subsides after a few days as your teeth adjust to the movement. Eating softer foods, applying a small amount of dental wax and gargling saltwater can all help with discomfort. How to relieve pain from braces? Cold or hot compresses work a treat. Consult your orthodontist if you experience severe pain or ongoing discomfort.

Just like with your teeth, it is natural for your braces to become discoloured over time. Brushing and flossing with a water flosser twice a day can help to remove stains and prevent build up around your brackets and wires.
If staining becomes noticeable please visit your dentist for a hygiene appointment and ask about new elastics.
To further prevent staining consider adjusting your diet.

Ask for a glass of tap water while eating or drinking items that may discolour your teeth. Rinse with this water between bites to help to minimise staining.
Congratulations ! You have just had your braces fit. Here's what to expect in the following days, weeks and months of treatment.
The first few days
When installed and after each adjustment you will potentially feel some mild pain as teeth are coaxed into a new position. This is normal. Treat any symptoms with your choice of over the counter pain medication.
You will notice a different sensation behind your lips as the brackets and wires press against your skin. This sensation will disappear as you become used to wearing them.
You may need to change how you sleep to be comfortable while wearing your braces.
You may notice some slurring as you speak. This will reduce as you become used to your braces.
If braces are sharp or painful consider using dental wax. Apply liberally to the problem areas when needed to aleviate this pain. If pain continues for several days please contact your dentist to discuss adjustment.
After a week
You will start to notice teeth moving into alignment.Gaps begin to close, crowding starts to correct and bite issues start to become less noticeable.The changes will be subtle at first.
Pain will liley have ceased and the braces will feel natural in your mouth.
After a fortnight
Its time to visit your dentist for an adjustment. Discuss any issues or concerns with them. Like before, you might experience some mild pain as your teeth become adccustomed to their new alignment.
After a month
You will have undergone a few adjustments by now.
Family friends and colleagues will potentially notice your teeth becoming straighter.
You’ll check-in with your dentist once a month, just to make sure everything looks good and your treatment is on track.
It depends. For mild issues, like a few small gaps, you might only need braces for a few months. If you have severe crowding, overlapping and bite misalignment, you could be looking at up to 30 months. This timeframe comes down to a few things: the type of braces you get, how old you are (younger patients see results faster), compliance with wearing your elastics, your genetic response and bone density. Some people may need some extra support in the form of jaw surgery.
If comparing to NHS fixed metal braces for under 18's then yes. As a private orthodontic treatment, ceramic braces are considerably more expensive. The difference is £2,795 for a private treatment vs the NHS band 3 treatment costing £332.10 plus £27.90 for each adjustment (Band 1).
For adults the difference in pricing is not as big as you think. Many orthodontists often offering ceramic braces at comparable prices to fixed metal braces.
No, you don’t have to lose all your baby teeth before getting braces. Early orthodontics can help prevent future bite issues or guide adult teeth into a more harmonious position in the jaw. Of course, we recommend speaking with an orthodontist on behalf of patients under 16 looking at getting braces.
If you go private for your braces (skipping the NHS waiting lists), then you’re looking at anywhere from £1,500 to £10,000. Metal braces are of course the most affordable, ranging from £1,500 to £3,000. Self-ligating braces (e.g. Damon) for £1,500 to £6,000, followed by ceramic braces (£2,000–£6,000). “Invisible braces” otherwise known as clear aligners (£1,500–£5,000) and lingual braces (£2,000–£10,000).
Metal braces are free for under 18s through the NHS if you’re deemed clinically suitable. For adults, braces are rarely made available (for free) on the NHS.
Not typically. Brackets are only placed on about 28 teeth, excluding wisdom teeth. But don’t take this verbatim — your orthodontist may recommend a different treatment plan based on your unique dental needs.
To put it simply, metal braces are more durable and cost-effective than ceramic braces, and they also work a little bit faster. So although they’re more visible (with larger brackets) you’ll see results sooner. Ceramic braces are slightly easier to clean, with rounded edges making them more comfortable to wear, and tooth-coloured (so they’re practically invisible). The downsides — a higher price point and fragile ceramic brackets, which are more likely to chip or crack.
The biggest difference between clear aligners and ceramic braces is “set-and-forget” reliability. Unlike aligners (which require at least 22 hours of daily wear and weekly tray changes), ceramic braces are fixed. So if you’re not one for carrying, changing or keeping aligner trays safe, ceramic braces eliminate the risk of treatment delays caused by aligner mishaps. They’re also slightly more efficient for complex tooth movements because they apply constant pressure 24/7.
In most cases ceramic braces do not cause any damage to your teeth.
The exception being deep bite correction where the wires and brackets used can affect a set of teeth. Discuss any concerns with your dentist.
After having dentists many people notice yellow circles on their teeth. This is natural plaque and tartar build-up and can be removed with a hygiene appointment.
Other issues can occur due to unwanted sharp edges on the braces potentially cutting into the mouth. Use dental wax to treat the immediate issue and discuss adjustment with your dentist if symptoms persist.
